The Detective Is Already Dead is a mystery, action, and romantic comedy story with a title that tells you something shocking right away. Its second anime season arrives in October 2026 (AniList lists October 7). Manabu Kurihara directs it, and the main cast and staff from the first season return. The first season was made by studio ENGI and aired from July 4 to September 19, 2021. The story comes from a light novel series by Nigojuu, with art by Umibouzu, published under the MF Bunko J label since 2019. It won that label's newcomer award in 2019, and the books had reached one million copies in circulation by mid-2022. The main character is Kimihiko Kimizuka. He has an unlucky gift: trouble always finds him. He walks into crimes, gets pulled into strange events, and ends up in danger without trying. Years ago, on an airplane flight, a call went out asking if there was a detective on board. That is where he met Siesta, a brilliant young detective with a calm face and a sharp mind. She took him on as her assistant. Together they traveled the world and solved cases. As the title says, the story begins after Siesta has already died. Kimihiko is now a regular high school student again, trying to live a quiet life. But he cannot forget her, and the past is not done with him. The story often jumps between the present and memories of his adventures with Siesta. Those adventures pulled them into a fight with a dangerous secret group called SPES. In the present, new people come into Kimihiko's life. Nagisa Natsunagi is a bold, strong-willed girl with a close link to Siesta's story. Yui Saikawa is a popular idol singer who comes to him for help. Charlotte Arisaka Anderson, a skilled fighter who once worked closely with Siesta, also returns. Each of them brings new cases and new emotions. The series mixes many moods. It can be a light comedy one moment, a tense action scene the next, and a sad story about grief and memory after that. At its heart, it is about a boy learning to move forward after losing someone important, and about what it means to carry on another person's work. The first season was known for its bold opening and its unusual, non-linear way of telling the story. Season 2 continues from where the first ended, so it is best to watch season 1 first.
