Devils' Crest (also written Demons' Crest) is a new anime from Production I.G, one of Japan's best-known animation studios. It is based on a series of light novels by Reki Kawahara, the writer who created Sword Art Online. A light novel is a short Japanese novel for young readers, usually with anime-style pictures. The art for these books is by Yukiko Horiguchi. The first book came out in Japan in November 2022 under the Dengeki Bunko label, and Yen Press began selling the English version in June 2024. The anime is set to start streaming on Amazon Prime Video on November 6, 2026. The story begins in the near future, on June 6, 2031. A new virtual reality game called Actual Magic is being tested. In a virtual reality game, players wear special gear so that they feel like they are standing inside the game world. Actual Magic is an online role-playing game, the kind where many people play together, fight monsters, and grow stronger over time. The test should be fun and safe. It does not stay that way. The hero is Yuuma Ashihara, a boy who is still in elementary school. He joins the test with his twin sister, Sawa. Soon something goes very wrong. The game world starts to mix with the real world. The line between playing and living disappears. Monsters from the game are no longer just pictures on a screen. They are real, and they are dangerous. The danger becomes personal when Yuuma sees what has happened to his classmate Sumika Watamaki. She has been changed into one of the game's monsters. From that moment, the story becomes a fight to stay alive. Yuuma must protect himself and his sister while he tries to understand the rules of this strange new world. Other students from his school are pulled into the trouble too, including classmates Kenji Kondo and Minagi Sano. Because the main characters are young children, the danger feels even bigger. They do not have adult skills or adult strength. They must think fast, work together, and make hard choices. The series mixes several genres. It is an action and adventure story, but it is also urban fantasy, which means magic and monsters appear in a normal modern city instead of a far-away fantasy land. It also has the feeling of a death game, a type of story where losing can mean losing your life. Fans of Kawahara's earlier work will notice a familiar idea: what happens when a video game stops being only a game? Here, though, the game does not trap players inside a virtual world. It breaks out and takes over the real one. The anime has a strong team behind it. Kenichiro Komaya directs, and Shinji Ushiro is the chief director. The popular singer Ado performs the opening song, called "Shinka." There is also a webtoon version of the story, a comic made to be read by scrolling on a phone, which started in November 2022. For viewers who like tense survival stories, game worlds, and young heroes facing a frightening change in their everyday lives, Devils' Crest is a title to watch for this fall.
