Inako Momokawa

Sparks of Tomorrow is an original-feeling steampunk adventure from Kyoto Animation, the studio behind Violet Evergarden and K-On!. It is based on a light novel by Hiro Yuki with pictures by Kazumi Ikeda. That book won an honorable mention at the 8th Kyoto Animation Awards in 2017, and it was the only winner that year. KyoAni published it itself in 2018. The TV anime marks the first time Minoru Ota worked as a series director, and Hitomi Koto wrote the music. It aired in Japan from July 5 to September 27, 2026, and Netflix streamed it worldwide. The story takes place in Japan in the summer of 1907, near the end of the Meiji era. The Meiji era was the time when Japan quickly changed from an old feudal country into a modern nation. But this is an alternate history. In this world, new technology came slowly, and people still depend on steam engines for power. So much steam is burned that the old city of Kyoto is covered in thick, dirty smog. The heroine is Inako Momokawa, a 15-year-old girl whose family owns an old sake brewery in the Fushimi area of Kyoto. Sake is a Japanese rice wine. Inako often feels clumsy and useless, and her strict father is always angry with her. She finds comfort in praying at shrines. Then her father starts to arrange a marriage for her, without asking what she wants. Inako meets Kihachi Sakamoto, a strange and bold young man who loves to build machines and invent new things. Kihachi does not believe in the gods. He believes in electricity, which he thinks will change the world and clear away the smog. As a boy, he and his older brother, Seiroku, promised to bring the age of electricity to Japan. Kihachi even wrote down his ideas about the future in a book. Now both the book and Seiroku are missing. Kihachi convinces Inako that finding this book could be her way out of the marriage. The two set out together to search across Kyoto and the nearby Shiga area. The show is a mix of adventure, comedy, and a gentle love story. It is about two young people who want to choose their own future, at a time when family and tradition decide most things. It also asks how new ideas and old beliefs can live side by side. As with most KyoAni work, the art is detailed and beautiful, with lovely views of old Kyoto shrines and streets in the haze of steam. Fans and critics praised its look and its warm, hopeful mood. It is a good choice for viewers who enjoy history, inventions, and a slow-building friendship between two very different people.
