Sakura is a first-year student who transfers to Furin High School, a school known across town for its tough, delinquent reputation. He stands out because of his unusual two-toned hair and eyes, a trait that made other kids avoid him when he was young.
Growing up alone and facing constant rejection taught him to fight well, and for a long time he believed that winning fights was the only thing that proved he mattered. Sakura tries hard to act cold and dangerous on the outside, wanting people to see him as someone not to mess with. Underneath that mask, though, he is warm-hearted and gets flustered easily whenever someone thanks him or says something nice about him, a classic sign that he is kinder than he lets on. He looks up to strong people and wants to become one of the best fighters at Furin.
After getting into a huge street fight, Sakura ends up meeting classmates who choose to stand and fight beside him instead of turning away. This is new for him, since he is used to being pushed aside. He grows close to Hayato Suou and a friend named Akihiko Nirei, and the three become tight partners. Sakura struggles at first to accept the kindness and support offered by Bofurin, the group that protects the town, because he is not used to people being kind to him without a reason. Slowly, through these new friendships, he begins to open up and let go of some of his old loneliness.

WIND BREAKER is a street-fighting action show from the studio CloverWorks. Its first season aired in Japan from April to June 2024, and a second season followed in spring 2025. It is based on a manga by Satoru Nii that began in January 2021 on Kodansha's Magazine Pocket app. The manga has passed 27 volumes and more than 10 million copies, and Kodansha USA publishes it in English. The story is set in Makochi, a small town where one high school stands out. Furin High School has a bad reputation. Its students get poor grades, and almost everyone there is a delinquent, a word for teens who break rules and get into fights. Many tough kids come to Furin just because they want to be the strongest fighter around. That is exactly why Haruka Sakura transfers there. Sakura is a first-year student who grew up alone and was treated as an outsider. He stands out at once, with two different eye colors and hair that is half black and half white. He trusts nobody and believes only in his own fists. His plan is simple: fight his way up until he is the top of the school. But Furin is not what Sakura expected. Its students have formed a group called Bofurin, and instead of causing trouble, they protect the town. They guard local shops, help neighbors, and stand up to outside gangs. The people of Makochi trust them and thank them. For a loner like Sakura, being cheered on by strangers is new and confusing. Sakura slowly gathers friends. Akihiko Nirei is a weak fighter but a hard worker who keeps careful notes on everyone. Hayato Suo is calm, polite, and much more dangerous than he looks. Kyotaro Sugishita starts out as a rival who clashes with Sakura. Above them all is Hajime Umemiya, the warm and easygoing leader of Bofurin. Rival groups, such as the gang Shishitoren, push the Furin students into big, bruising battles that test what they fight for. At its heart, WIND BREAKER is a coming-of-age story. It asks what real strength means: just winning, or using your power to protect people who matter to you. The fights are fast and stylish, but the emotional core is Sakura learning to accept help and to belong. The series streams on Crunchyroll and began airing on Adult Swim's Toonami block in October 2026. It also got a stage play in January 2025 and a live-action film in December 2025.
