Hana Danno works alongside Ryuu Tadera to protect Yuru after the massacre that destroys his home village. Like Ryuu, she is tasked with keeping the boy safe in a dangerous new world, and the two maintain a careful cover story in which Hana poses as Ryuu's new young wife, making her, at least in appearance, Yuru's unwilling stepmother.
Hana goes along with the arrangement reluctantly, since playing a role that is not really hers clearly is not how she imagined her life going, but she takes the actual job of protecting Yuru seriously and sincerely. She is paired with her own daemon guardian spirits, giving her real supernatural strength to call on whenever the mission turns dangerous.
Offstage from the danger, Hana has a lighter, more human side: she daydreams about a famous action star as her ideal man, a detail that stands out amusingly against the serious, high-stakes world she actually lives in. She mostly tolerates Ryuu's half-joking suggestions that she should marry him for real, playing along with his teasing without ever quite admitting whether any part of her is tempted by the idea. Together, she and Ryuu form a steady, if unconventional, protective team around Yuru as he tries to find his missing family.

Yomi no Tsugai, known in English as Daemons of the Shadow Realm, is the newest big manga by Hiromu Arakawa, the artist who made Fullmetal Alchemist. It began in Square Enix's Monthly Shonen Gangan in December 2021. By 2026 it had 13 books and more than 7.5 million copies in print. The manga also won several prizes, including the grand prize at the Tsutaya Comic Award and second place in both Kono Manga ga Sugoi! and the Manga Taisho. The anime is made by Bones Film and directed by Masahiro Ando. Noboru Takagi wrote the series plan, Nobuhiro Arai designed the characters, and Kenichiro Suehiro wrote the music. The first season aired in two parts from April 4 to September 19, 2026, and a second season has already been announced. The story begins far from modern life. Yuru's home is a very old, hidden mountain community. It has been cut off from the outside world for hundreds of years. The people there call the rest of Japan the "Lowlands." Yuru is a calm, kind boy who is very good at hunting with a bow. His days are simple and happy, and he cares deeply about Asa, his twin. The two were born at a special moment between day and night, and people say this gives them great power. But Asa does not live freely like her brother. She is kept shut away and is told she must serve the community in a secret way. That peaceful picture does not last. Armed outsiders from a modern group called the Kagemori family attack the hidden settlement, and they bring guns and strange powers. The biggest shock is that one of the attackers looks exactly like Asa. In the chaos, Yuru wakes two powerful spirit beings named Left and Right. In this story, a Tsugai is a pair of these beings that serve a human partner. Yuru then leaves the mountains for the first time in his life. He wants to find his sister and learn the truth about why the two of them were born. This setup lets the show play with a fun contrast. Yuru knows a lot about forests, hunting, and old customs. But cars, phones, and city streets are brand new to him, and that brings many funny moments. At the same time, the story becomes a battle between people who each command their own Tsugai. Many groups want the twins' power for their own goals. Readers and viewers often say that the series is full of surprise twists. Again and again, it changes what you thought you knew about a character or about Yuru's home. The tone mixes dark and light in the way Arakawa fans expect. There are serious fights, blood, and hard questions about trust and family. But there are also silly jokes, warm moments, and a cast of strange, lovable partners. The themes include twins, old Japanese spirit folklore, life in the countryside against life in the modern city, and the bond between a person and the beings who fight beside them. For new viewers, it is an action fantasy with a strong mystery at its center. It is also a story about a brother who will cross any line to reach his sister.
