This anime takes viewers to a palace in a fantasy land that looks a lot like old China. It is based on a light novel series by Rinne Ishida, with art by Izumi. A light novel is a Japanese book for young readers with some pictures. The books have come out from Kadokawa's B's-LOG Bunko line since July 2017, and there are about 18 volumes. There is also a manga version by Waka Takase in Akita Shoten's girls' magazine Princess. In English, the anime has been called The Tale of the Scholar-Official Matsurika. The studio Maho Film is making it, with Takeshi Mori as chief director and Yuichi Nakazawa as director. It is set to start in January 2027. The heroine is Matsurika Kou. She works in the inner palace, the private part of the royal home where the emperor's wives and the women who serve them live. Matsurika is a court lady there, a kind of officer and helper. She does not have money or fame. What she does have is an amazing memory. She can remember things much better than the people around her. One day, Matsurika agrees to do a favor. She will pretend to be a bride at a practice meeting, so that a young man from a rich family can get ready for a real marriage talk. It sounds easy. But the man who shows up is not who she expected. He is Hakuyou, the emperor himself. He wanted to see what such a meeting would be like. Hakuyou becomes very interested in Matsurika, and especially in her great memory. Instead of keeping her in the palace, he gives her a surprising order. He tells her to take the civil service exam. In old China, this was a very hard test that people had to pass to work for the government as scholars and officials. Few people passed it, and women were rarely part of that world. Now Matsurika must study hard and try to win a place there. The story is often described as a Chinese-style Cinderella tale. A girl from a humble place catches the eye of the most powerful man in the land. But Matsurika's path is not only about romance. She has to use her own mind and hard work to rise. That mix of love story and career story is a big part of its charm. The genres are drama, fantasy, and romance, with royal life and court politics in the background. Fans of palace stories like The Apothecary Diaries may enjoy it. The main cast is Rie Takahashi as Matsurika and Nobunaga Shimazaki as Emperor Hakuyou. Toko Machida writes the series plan, Manami Inose designs the characters, and Takuro Iga composes the music. With a smart heroine, a curious emperor, and a world of exams and palace rules, the show promises a calm but clever love story.
