Hunter x Hunter (2011) is a long adventure anime made by the studio Madhouse and directed by Hiroshi Kojina. It ran for 148 episodes on Nippon Television from October 2011 to September 2014. The show is based on the manga (Japanese comic) by Yoshihiro Togashi. It is a full, fresh retelling of that manga. It has no link to the older anime version from 1999, so new viewers can start here with no homework. The world of the show is huge and full of danger. There are wild islands, strange animals, secret towns, and cities run by crime bosses. In this world, a Hunter is a licensed expert. Hunters can chase rare beasts, find lost treasure, track wanted people, or explore places no map shows. A Hunter license opens many doors, so many people want one. But getting it is very hard, and some people who try do not come home. The hero is Gon Freecss, a cheerful boy of twelve from a quiet island. Gon grew up without his dad, Ging. When Gon learns that Ging left to live the life of a Hunter, he decides to become one too. He hopes that this path will lead him to his father one day. So Gon says goodbye to his aunt and his home and sets off to take the Hunter Exam. On the way, Gon meets three people who become his closest friends. Killua is a sharp, bored boy from a family of professional killers who wants a different life. Kurapika is a calm and clever young man who carries a deep need for justice after a great loss. Leorio is a loud, warm-hearted man who wants money so he can study to be a doctor. They are very different people, but they learn to trust each other. Their friendship is the heart of the whole series. The story moves through six big arcs, or story parts. They are the Hunter Exam, Heavens Arena, the Phantom Troupe, Greed Island, the Chimera Ant arc, and the Election. Each arc feels new. One part is a series of strange tests. Another is a fighting tower. Another is a dark crime story in a big city. Another takes place inside a mysterious game. This keeps the show fresh over many episodes. A key part of the show is Nen. Nen is a way to control the life energy inside your body. Each person's Nen ability is shaped by their personality, and it often comes with its own rules and limits. Because of this, fights are not just about who hits hardest. They are more like puzzles, where smart thinking and planning often win. The tone starts bright and fun, like a classic boy's adventure. As the show goes on, it grows darker and asks harder questions about what makes someone human, and what friends owe each other. Critics gave the series very strong praise. Outlets such as Polygon, Crunchyroll, and IGN named it one of the best anime of the 2010s. Many fans call the Chimera Ant arc one of the greatest story arcs in anime.
