Horror Collector (Kyoufu Collector in Japanese) is a 12-episode horror mystery anime. It premieres on NHK General TV on October 10, 2026, and Crunchyroll streams it. Studio Palette makes the show, and Yuki Inaba both directs it and writes the scripts. The story comes from a long-running children's horror novel series by Norio Tsuruta and Midori Sato, with art by Yon. Kadokawa has published it since 2015, and it has 28 books so far. Yen Press releases it in English. The show is built around toshi densetsu, the Japanese term for modern folk tales. These are scary stories that people pass along as if they truly happened, like a ghost on a lonely road or a strange figure seen at night. In this series, such tales do not stay as rumors. They turn real and show up in ordinary towns, hidden just out of sight. Lately, the number of these strange events keeps growing. The hero is a young traveler named Fushigi, who always wears a red hooded coat. He loves mysteries. He goes from town to town across the country to look into each odd tale, study it, and record it in his collection. He has a strange partner on the road. Jimmy used to be a photographer, but now he has the body of a dog with a human face. Jimmy is creepy to look at, yet he is also funny in a dark way and a loyal friend. Fushigi has a personal reason for this work. He is searching for his twin sister, Himitsu, who wears a black hooded coat. She has the power to make these spooky events appear. Each case Fushigi follows brings him one step closer to her. For the ordinary people caught up in one of these tales, things look very bad. Their best hope is that Fushigi reaches them in time to explain what is going on and get them out safely. The tone is eerie and mysterious, with a mix of single-episode scares and a bigger story underneath. It should appeal to viewers who like folk horror and youkai tales. Youkai are spirits and monsters from Japanese folklore. Another mysterious figure in the series is the Blue Umbrella Man. The voice cast is strong. Hiiro Ishibashi plays Fushigi, Jun Fukuyama plays Jimmy, Saori Hayami plays Himitsu, and Nobuhiko Okamoto plays the Blue Umbrella Man. Kaori Yoshikawa designed the characters, and Masato Koda wrote the music. The singer Shikao Suga performs both the opening song, "Kageboshi", and the ending song.
