Black Clover is a long fantasy action series made by Studio Pierrot. It is based on the manga by Yuki Tabata, which began in Weekly Shonen Jump in February 2015. (A manga is a Japanese comic book, and "shonen" means stories made mainly for teenage boys.) The TV anime ran for 170 episodes, from October 2017 to March 2021, on TV Tokyo. It is a big, loud, and hopeful show about never quitting, even when the whole world tells you that you are not good enough. The story takes place in the Clover Kingdom. In this land, almost every person is born with magic. Magic decides your job, your rank, and how people treat you. Rich nobles live in the center of the kingdom and have the strongest spells. Poor villagers live far out on the edges and are often looked down on. At the top of it all stands the Wizard King, the greatest mage in the country and its hero. Under the Wizard King are the Magic Knights, groups of fighters split into squads that protect the kingdom. Two boys grow up together as orphans in a small village far from the capital. Yuno is calm, quiet, and full of natural talent. His power is wind magic. Asta is the opposite. He is noisy, very stubborn, and he has no magic at all, which almost never happens in this world. To make up for it, Asta trains his body every single day until he is incredibly strong. Both boys share one goal: each wants to become the next Wizard King. They are best friends, but they also push each other as rivals. When they turn fifteen, the young people of the village get a grimoire. A grimoire is a magic book that helps its owner cast spells. Most grimoires have three leaves on the cover. Yuno gets a legendary four-leaf book. Asta, at first, gets nothing. Then he finds a rare, dirty, five-leaf book that holds swords instead of spells. These swords carry anti-magic, a power that can cut through and cancel other people's magic. For the first time, the boy without magic has a real weapon. Next, the two friends take the test to join the Magic Knights. Yuno is picked by the Golden Dawn, an elite squad. Asta is taken in by the Black Bulls, a squad of misfits that other knights think is the worst in the kingdom. The Black Bulls are led by Captain Yami Sukehiro, a tough and scary man who is loyal to his team. One new member is Noelle Silva, a proud girl from a royal family who has huge power but struggles to control her water magic. Together with the rest of the odd, funny crew, Asta goes on missions, fights dangerous enemies, and slowly earns respect. The show mixes big battles with lots of comedy and strong feelings. It deals with ideas like class and unfairness, found family (friends who become as close as family), and working hard when you have no natural gift. The early episodes move a bit slowly, but many fans say the story gets much stronger as it goes on. The manga has sold more than 25 million copies worldwide. The series also led to a movie, Black Clover: Sword of the Wizard King, in June 2023, and a new anime season was set to begin in October 2026.
