Edward, who mostly goes by Ed, is a teenage computer genius who first appears by hacking into the Bebop's systems while the ship is on its way to Earth. After helping the crew cash in a bounty tied to that very hack, Ed decides she wants to stay, and when Faye Valentine tries to leave without her, Ed simply hacks the ship again and refuses to let it move until she is allowed to join.
She is wildly eccentric, childlike, and easily distracted, often drifting off mid-thought in the middle of a conversation, which makes her the crew's main source of comedy. Despite the goofy exterior, she is a genuine hacking prodigy, and her unusual mind lets her notice things the adults around her miss. Her early life was harder than her playful attitude suggests: she spent time in an orphanage after her father left her there as a child.
Of the crew, Jet Black treats her with the most open warmth, and Ed slowly grows close to everyone aboard despite her scattered personality. When she eventually learns her father is looking for her, she invents a fake bounty on him just to convince Spike Spiegel to track him down, and once he's found, Ed leaves the Bebop for good, taking the data dog Ein with her.

Cowboy Bebop is a 1998 TV anime made by the studio Sunrise and directed by Shinichiro Watanabe. Keiko Nobumoto wrote the scripts, and Yoko Kanno wrote the music, which is played by her band, the Seatbelts. The show has 26 episodes, which it calls "sessions," like a music jam. Only part of it aired at first on TV Tokyo in 1998. The full series aired later on the WOWOW channel from 1998 into 1999. It is often called one of the best anime series of all time, and for many people in the West it was the first anime they ever loved. The story takes place in the year 2071. Decades earlier, an accident with a hyperspace gate, a kind of space doorway for fast travel, badly damaged Earth and the Moon. Now most people live on other planets and moons around the solar system. There is a lot of crime, and the police cannot catch everyone. So the government pays bounty hunters, people who hunt wanted criminals for reward money. People call these hunters "cowboys." The show follows the small crew of an old fishing ship turned spaceship called the Bebop. Spike Spiegel is relaxed and lazy most of the time, but he is a brilliant fighter and pilot, and he has a dark past he does not like to talk about. Jet Black owns the ship. He used to be a police officer, he has a metal arm, and he likes cooking and bonsai trees. Over time, others join them. Faye Valentine is a sharp-tongued woman who loves to gamble and is always in debt. Edward, or Ed, is a strange and cheerful young girl who is an amazing hacker. Ein is a Welsh corgi who is much smarter than he looks. Most episodes are their own small story. The crew chases a new bounty, and something usually goes wrong, so they end up broke and hungry again. Some episodes are action stories, some are funny, and some are sad or strange. A few episodes tell a bigger story about Spike's past with the Red Dragon Syndicate, a crime group, and about his old partner Vicious and a woman named Julia. Each crew member is running from their past in some way. The show mixes many styles. It is science fiction, but it also feels like a Western movie, an old crime film, and a jazz club. The music changes with each episode, from fast jazz to blues to rock. Under the cool style, the show is about loneliness, boredom, and how hard it is to leave old memories behind. Its English dub is also very well known and loved. Cowboy Bebop won several Japanese awards, inspired many later creators, and led to a 2001 film. A live-action Netflix version came out in 2021 but was canceled after one season.
