The Case Files of Biblia Bookstore is one of Japan's best-selling mystery book series. It was written by En Mikami, with cover art by Hagu Koshijima, and it started in March 2011. By April 2026, twelve books were out and the series had sold about 8.5 million copies. It was nominated for well-known Japanese prizes for mystery writing and for books that store staff love. It has already been made into a TV drama in 2013 and a live-action movie in 2018. This new TV anime comes from studio CloverWorks and is directed by Mamoru Kanbe, who also made the mystery anime SHOSHIMIN. Toshiya Ono writes the scripts, Jun Nakai designs the characters, and Takahiro Obata makes the music. It is set to start in April 2027. The story takes place in Kamakura, an old seaside city near Tokyo that is famous for its temples. Near the train station there is a small, quiet shop that sells used and rare old books. It is called Biblia. The shop is full of dusty shelves and old paper, and each book has a history. The owner is Shioriko Shinokawa, a young woman who is very shy with people. She speaks softly and often has trouble talking to strangers. But when the topic turns to books, she changes completely. She knows an amazing amount about old Japanese books, who owned them, and how they were made and sold. Just by looking closely at a book, she can figure out secrets about the people connected to it. Daisuke Goura is a big, friendly young man with an unusual problem. Because of something that happened when he was a child, he cannot read books for long without feeling sick, even though he wishes he could. One day he brings in a set of novels by Natsume Soseki, a very famous Japanese writer from the late 1800s and early 1900s. The books came from his late grandmother, and one of them has a signature with a story behind it. This visit brings him into Shioriko's world, and soon he starts working at the shop. Each case in the series is built around a real book. A customer comes in with a book and a problem, and Shioriko uses what she knows to solve the puzzle while Daisuke helps and listens. The mysteries are usually small and human, about family, love, regret, and old secrets, rather than about murder. The main cast is Riko Akechi as Shioriko and Shunsuke Takeuchi as Daisuke. If you love calm mysteries, cozy old shops, and stories about why books matter to people, this is one to watch for.
