Made in Abyss: Awakening Mystery (in Japanese, Mezameru Shinpi) is a new movie in the Made in Abyss series. It opens in Japanese theaters on October 23, 2026. Studio Kinema Citrus, which has made all of the anime so far, is making it. Masayuki Kojima, the director of the earlier seasons, directs again, and Hideyuki Kurata handles the story structure. This film is the first part of a new trilogy of Made in Abyss movies. It continues the story after the second TV season, The Golden City of the Scorching Sun, which aired in 2022. Made in Abyss is based on the manga by Akihito Tsukushi. The story centers on the Abyss, a giant, deep hole in the ground on an island. No one knows how deep it goes. It is full of strange creatures and ancient objects called relics. A town, Orth, has grown up around its edge. Brave explorers called Cave Raiders go down into the Abyss to find relics. The Abyss has a terrible rule, often called its curse. Going down is easy, but coming back up makes the body sick. The deeper you go, the worse it gets, and at the lowest levels the return trip can change a person forever or kill them. The main characters are Riko, a brave and curious orphan girl who wants to become a great Cave Raider like her mother, and Reg, a robot who looks like a human boy and does not remember his past. They go down into the Abyss together, and on the way they meet Nanachi, a kind, fluffy being with a painful history, who becomes their friend and guide. Miyu Tomita, Mariya Ise, and Shiori Izawa return as the voices of Riko, Reg, and Nanachi. The official details for this film are still very limited. It is known to pick up after the events of the second season, as the three friends keep going deeper toward the bottom of the Abyss. This page does not guess at the plot beyond that. A word of warning for new viewers: Made in Abyss looks cute, with round, soft character designs and beautiful painted backgrounds. But it is a dark and often very violent story. It shows pain, loss, and body horror, and it is meant for older viewers. Many fans love it for this contrast: a sense of wonder and adventure mixed with real danger and deep sadness. The music and world-building are also widely praised. To understand this movie, you should watch the first season, the film Dawn of the Deep Soul, and the second season first.
