Chihiro Rokuhira grew up training in isolation under his father, Kunishige, a legendary swordsmith famous for forging six incredibly powerful blades known as the Enchanted Blades. The story takes place eighteen years after a great war, and for most of his childhood, Chihiro's quiet life with his father was the only world he knew.
That life ends when a criminal group called the Hishaku, a band of sorcerers hunting the Enchanted Blades, kills Kunishige and steals all six weapons. Chihiro survives with a seventh, secret blade his father made, called Enten, and sets out on a path of revenge against the people responsible. He later learns a harder truth: his father actually built Enten to destroy the other six blades, out of guilt over how much destruction they caused during the war.
Despite his quiet, serious manner, Chihiro is not cold-hearted. He tries to avoid hurting people who are not involved in his fight, and he is a careful observer who can pick up new sword techniques just by watching them once. On his journey he gains real allies, including his father's old friend Togo Shiba, who travels with him and shares his desire for justice, even as some of them pay a heavy price to protect him.

Kagurabachi began as a manga by Takeru Hokazono in Weekly Shonen Jump in September 2023. At first it got attention in a strange way. Fans online turned its serious tone and simple panels into jokes and memes, and many people started reading it just to see what the fuss was about. Then they stayed, because the story was good. On the Manga Plus app it even passed hits like Spy x Family in popularity, and in 2024 it won the Next Manga Award for print manga. A TV anime made by the studio Cypic, directed by Tetsuya Takeuchi, is planned for April 2027, with Crunchyroll streaming it in most of the world. The story takes place in modern Japan, eighteen years after a conflict called the Seitei War. In this world there are sorcerers, people who can use a special energy to fight. There are also Enchanted Blades. These are magic swords so strong that they helped end the war. They were made by one man, the legendary swordsmith Kunishige Rokuhira. Kunishige's son is Chihiro Rokuhira. As a boy, Chihiro trains at his father's side and dreams of one day forging great swords too. Their life is simple and happy. Kunishige is relaxed and a little silly, while Chihiro is calm and serious. Then one night everything ends. A group of criminal sorcerers called the Hishaku attacks the workshop. They kill Kunishige and steal six of his Enchanted Blades. Years later, Chihiro is eighteen. He carries a hidden seventh sword his father made, a blade called Enten. With it, he sets out to take back the stolen swords and punish the people who killed his father. His goal is revenge, plain and clear. Chihiro does not talk much and rarely smiles, but he has a strong sense of right and wrong, and he often ends up protecting people who get caught in the danger. He is not completely alone. Togo Shiba, a powerful sorcerer and an old friend of the family, watches over him and helps him find leads. Along the way, Chihiro runs into gangsters who want the blades for themselves, sorcerers for hire, and a government group called Kamunabi that guards the swords. One of its elite fighters, Hiyuki Kagari, starts out on the other side from Chihiro. The Hishaku themselves are a band of ten strong criminal sorcerers, and each one is a dangerous enemy. Kagurabachi mixes old samurai-style sword fights with a modern city full of crime bosses. Its fights are fast, bloody, and drawn with a movie-like style, using wide shots and sudden close-ups. The mood is dark and cool, close to a gangster or revenge film. Readers should know there is a lot of violence. At its heart, though, it is a story about grief, about a son keeping his father's work alive, and about whether revenge can ever make things right.
