Angela Balzac starts the story as a loyal officer of DEVA, a space station where most of humanity lives as digital minds inside a comfortable virtual paradise. Sent down to the ruined surface of Earth to track a mysterious hacker known as Frontier Setter, Angela approaches the mission with real arrogance, assuming she is better than the small, struggling population still living in physical bodies on the planet below.
Her stubborn, independent streak shows up immediately: rather than ask DEVA for help when she catches a cold in her temporary physical body, she simply endures it, unwilling to admit she might need support from anyone. That same independence slowly turns into genuine curiosity as she spends more time on Earth, and she starts noticing things DEVA considers pointless, like the taste of real food or the feeling of music, experiences her old digital life never let her miss because she never had access to them in the first place.
Working alongside a local pilot named Dingo changes her outlook even further. What starts as a straightforward hunt for a system-threatening hacker turns into something closer to genuine partnership, and by the story's end Angela makes a choice that would have been unthinkable to the arrogant agent who first arrived: she cuts her ties to DEVA's virtual paradise entirely, choosing to keep living as a real, physical person on Earth rather than return to a life of comfortable perfection.
