The World Is Dancing

The World Is Dancing is a historical drama about the early life of a real person: Zeami Motokiyo, one of the most important artists in Japanese history. Zeami helped shape Noh, a traditional form of Japanese theater that mixes dance, music, masks, and poetry. Noh is still performed today. It is often called the oldest theater art in the world that is still alive. The anime is based on a manga by Kazuto Mihara, which ran in Kodansha's magazine Morning from March 2021 to October 2022, in six volumes. Kodansha USA released it in English digitally. The anime was made by the studio Cypic and directed by Toshimasa Kuroyanagi, who also directed The Great Passage and Backflip!!. Sawako Kawamitsu wrote the scripts, and Keigo Sasaki designed the characters. It aired 13 episodes, from July to September 2026. In North America it streams on HIDIVE, licensed by Sentai Filmworks. It started streaming a few days before its Japanese TV debut.

The story takes place in the Muromachi period of Japan, in the 1300s. It is a time of war and change. Two rival imperial courts, the Northern Court and the Southern Court, are fighting for power. At the same time, art and culture are growing fast.

The hero is a boy named Oniyasha, born in 1374. This is the name Zeami had as a child. His family performs sarugaku, a popular kind of stage show that was an early form of Noh. His father, Kan'ami, leads their troupe, a group of traveling actors and dancers. Oniyasha has grown up on the stage, but he does not feel joy in it. He keeps asking simple, honest questions. Why should a dancer move this way and not another way? What makes one performance good and another one poor? And why do people even dance at all? To him, the rules feel empty.

One day, he sees a dance that truly feels good to him, and everything begins to change. He starts a long search for the meaning of his art. Over time, his talent grows, and he meets people who will shape his future. One of them is Ashikaga Yoshimitsu, the shogun, or military ruler of Japan, who becomes his patron, a powerful supporter who helps an artist with money and protection.

This is a quiet, thoughtful coming-of-age story rather than an action show. It is about creativity, beauty, and finding your own reasons to do what you love. The dance scenes are a big part of the experience. The show is a great pick for viewers who love history, theater, or stories about artists growing into their gifts.
