The Ogre's Bride

The Ogre's Bride began as a web novel by the writer Kureha. It first appeared in 2019 on Novema, a Japanese website for reading and posting stories. Starts Publishing then printed it as a light novel under its Starts Shuppan Bunko label, starting in October 2020, with art by Yu Shiroya. A manga drawn by Jun Togashi has run since December 2021, and it can be read in English on MangaPlaza. The story is popular enough that it was also made into a live-action film. That movie, directed by Chihiro Ikeda and released by Shochiku, came out on March 27, 2026. The anime came a few months later. It was made by Colored Pencil Animation Japan and directed by Kazuhito Omiya, with music by Masaru Yokoyama. It aired 12 episodes from July 5 to September 20, 2026, and streams on Crunchyroll. ClariS and Ikusaburo Yamazaki sing its theme songs.

The story is set in a modern Japan much like ours, with one big difference. Humans live side by side with ayakashi. Ayakashi are supernatural beings from Japanese folklore, like fox spirits, cat spirits, and ogres. Here, they are beautiful, very strong, and hold high places in society. Sometimes an ayakashi finds his one true partner among human women and makes her his bride. This is a great honor. A bride is loved completely by her ayakashi, and her family often becomes rich and successful because of the match.

Yuzu Shinonome is a high school girl who lives in the shadow of this system. Her older sister, Karin, was chosen as the bride of Yota, a fox spirit. Since then, their parents treat Karin like a treasure and mostly ignore Yuzu. Only her grandparents truly care for her. Yuzu is kind, but she has learned to hide her feelings and expect little from others. Karin is jealous and often cruel to her.

One day, things go too far. Yuzu is hurt by a burn from her sister's fox spirit partner, and she feels she cannot take it anymore. At that moment she meets Reiya Kiryuin. He is an ogre and the heir of the strongest ogre family. He has jet-black hair, red eyes, and a beauty that does not seem human. People think of him as cold because his face shows almost no emotion. Yet he tells Yuzu that she is the bride he has been looking for.

From there, the story is a kind of Cinderella tale with a Japanese folklore twist. A girl who was never valued suddenly receives deep, unconditional love. But accepting that love is not easy for someone who has been hurt for so long. Yuzu must learn to trust Reiya and to believe she deserves to be cared for. Her best friend Touko, who is engaged to a cat spirit named Nyankichi, supports her, and Reiya's loyal helper Takamichi is often nearby.

The show is a gentle romance with some painful family drama. It is best for viewers who enjoy slow, sweet love stories, strong emotional healing, and supernatural beings in a modern setting, similar to My Happy Marriage.
