About
Sumikko Gurashi the Movie: The Little Wizard in the Blue Moonlight is the second animated film in the Sumikko Gurashi series. Sumikko Gurashi is a set of cute characters created in 2012 by designer Yuri Yokomizo for the Japanese company San-X. The name means something like "life in the corner." The characters are shy creatures who feel most calm when they sit quietly in a corner. The film was directed by Takahiro Omori and made by the studio Fanworks, the same studio behind the first movie. It came out in Japanese theaters in 2021.
The main group will be familiar to fans. Shirokuma is a polar bear who ran away from the cold north because it gets cold easily. Penguin? is not sure if it is really a penguin. Tonkatsu is the fatty end piece of a pork cutlet that nobody ate. Neko is a shy cat that worries a lot. Tokage looks like a lizard but is secretly a young dinosaur. Small side characters appear too, such as Tapioca, a leftover tapioca pearl from a bubble tea. The whole series has a gentle message about caring for things and people that others leave behind.
In this movie, the friends go on an autumn camping trip. At night, a very large blue moon rises in the sky. There is an old story in town that says this special moon shows up only once every five years. On that night, wizards are said to come down and grant people's wishes. To everyone's surprise, a group of five wizard siblings really does arrive. They use their magic to turn ordinary places, like the park, the forest, and even the supermarket, into bright and sparkly party spaces. It is a happy, magical night.
When the fun is over, the wizards fly back to the moon. But there is a mix-up. The youngest wizard, a tiny new character named Five, has been left behind, and it seems that little Tapioca has gone with the wizards by mistake. The Sumikko friends now have to care for the small wizard and find a way to fix the mistake. The story is simple enough for young kids, but it also has warm and emotional moments about being small, feeling like you do not fit, and learning that you still matter.
The film was a big success in Japan. It opened at number two at the box office and later climbed to number one, and it earned more than one billion yen. As part of the franchise's 15th anniversary, it is being shown again in 82 theaters in Japan from October 31 to November 3, 2026, with a new short video after the credits and a special postcard for audiences.
