Hajime no Ippo: The Fighting!

Hajime no Ippo: The Fighting! is one of the most loved sports anime of all time. It is based on George Morikawa's boxing manga, which has run in Kodansha's Weekly Shonen Magazine since 1989. The manga now has more than 140 volumes and over 100 million copies in print, and it won the Kodansha Manga Award in 1991. Studio Madhouse made this first TV anime, and Satoshi Nishimura directed it. It aired on Nippon TV from October 4, 2000, to March 27, 2002, with 75 episodes. A TV movie, Champion Road, and an extra OVA (a story released straight to video) came out in 2003.

The hero is Ippo Makunouchi, a shy and gentle high school student. His father died when he was young, so he helps his mother run the family's small fishing boat business, which takes customers out to sea. Ippo works hard and is very strong from hauling ropes and boxes, but he has no confidence at all. At school, a group of bullies led by a boy named Umezawa picks on him again and again.

One day, after a bad beating, Ippo is rescued by Mamoru Takamura, a tall, cocky, and very talented professional boxer. Takamura brings him to the Kamogawa Boxing Gym to rest. There, Ippo sees real boxers training, and something wakes up in him. He wants to know what it feels like to be strong. Takamura does not think a timid boy like him will last, so he gives Ippo a hard test: catch ten falling leaves out of the air before they hit the ground. Ippo practices day and night. This odd test turns out to teach him the basic idea of a boxing punch called the jab, and soon he is on his way to becoming a fighter.

The gym is full of memorable people. Genji Kamogawa is the old, strict head coach. He is tough and grumpy, but he cares deeply about his boxers. Aoki and Kimura are two goofy gym members who joke around a lot but are serious fighters too. Takamura is wild and often rude, yet he is also the strongest boxer in the gym. Early on, Ippo also meets Ichiro Miyata, a cool and gifted young boxer who quickly becomes the rival he wants to catch up to.

The show is about hard work and growing as a person, more than it is about winning. Ippo is not a genius. He gets better through sweat, training, and refusing to give up, and the show makes every small step feel earned. It also explains real boxing ideas, like footwork, defense, and different punches, in a clear and exciting way. The matches are tense and full of power, but the series also has plenty of comedy, mostly from the gym's loud, silly members. Many fans call it the best boxing anime ever made, and reviewers have praised it as one of the top sports shows. The story continues in later seasons, starting with New Challenger in 2009.
