Gintama.: Silver Soul Arc - Second Half War

Gintama.: Silver Soul Arc - Second Half War is the second part of the final story arc of the Gintama anime. It was made by Bandai Namco Pictures and directed by Chizuru Miyawaki. It aired on TV Tokyo from July 9 to October 8, 2018, with 14 episodes, numbered 354 to 367 in the full series. It adapts the Silver Soul arc, which is the last arc of Hideaki Sorachi's manga.

Gintama takes place in a world where aliens called the Amanto took over Japan in the Edo period. Samurai were banned from carrying swords, and old Japan and space-age technology now live side by side. Gintoki Sakata, a silver-haired samurai, runs the Yorozuya, a shop for odd jobs, with Shinpachi and Kagura. The show began as a wild comedy, but over many years it built a big, serious story about war, loss, and friendship.

In the Silver Soul arc, all of that comes to a head. An alien army called the Altana Liberation Army has attacked Earth. In the first half of the arc, the people of Edo fought back hard, and the army had to pull back for a while. A key reason was a tiny, machine-based virus made by Gengai Hiraga, the old inventor of Edo. It stopped the enemy's weapons from working. Now the war enters a new stage.

In this second half, the fight happens in two places at once. On the ground, the Oniwaban ninja, the Shinsengumi police, and the people of the Kabuki District keep fighting the enemy soldiers who stayed behind. But the enemy takes Gengai, and his virus could soon be shut off. Up in space, a giant laser on the alien mothership is ready to destroy the whole planet. Shinsuke Takasugi and his rebel group, the Kiheitai, go aboard the ship to stop it. Gintoki and his friends have to win both battles, or Earth will be lost.

This season is mostly action and drama. Nearly every major character from the long series shows up and gets a moment to shine. Old enemies fight side by side, and many long stories between characters finally come together. The bond between Gintoki and his childhood friends is at the center of it all. Still, this is Gintama, so there are jokes even in the middle of the war. The characters sometimes stop to make fun of the show, the long ending, or themselves.

This season does not fully end the story. The final part of the Silver Soul arc was finished later in the movie Gintama: THE VERY FINAL, released in January 2021. So this TV season works best as the big build-up to that film. It is made for fans who have followed the series for a long time. For them, it is a loud, emotional, and very satisfying run of episodes.
