From Old Country Bumpkin to Master Swordsman II

From Old Country Bumpkin to Master Swordsman II is the second season of a fantasy action comedy about a humble middle-aged sword teacher. It is based on a light novel series by Shigeru Sagazaki, with art by Tetsuhiro Nabeshima, published by Square Enix since 2021. J-Novel Club publishes the novels in English, and Yen Press publishes the manga version. The series had more than 5.5 million copies in circulation by August 2024, and the manga won the 2023 Piccoma Award. The anime is made by Passione and Hayabusa Film and directed by Akio Kazumi. Season 1 aired in spring 2025, and this season aired from July to September 2026.

The hero is Beryl, a swordsman in his mid-forties. For most of his life, he ran a small sword school in a quiet farming village. He thinks of himself as an ordinary, slightly old man with nothing special about him. But over the years, many young people trained under him, and some of them became famous and powerful warriors. They all credit their success to his teaching, even though Beryl has no idea how strong he really is.

In the first season, one of his former students, Allucia, who now leads the kingdom's elite army of sword fighters, invited him to the capital city to train her soldiers. There, Beryl met more old students who had risen high in the world, such as the top-ranked adventurer Surena. He also took in Mewi, a young girl who had been living as a pickpocket, and became like a father to her.

In season 2, Beryl is getting used to his job in the capital and to caring for Mewi. But his calm days do not last. His work and his skills take him to many places: to a school for spellcasters, back to the village where he grew up, to the edge of the realm, and even to another country. Along the way, he meets new people, faces tough opponents, and keeps surprising everyone, including himself.

The charm of the show comes from Beryl's humble and kind personality. He is modest, a bit slow to notice how others see him, and always willing to help. This makes for many funny moments, especially when young fighters admire him far more than he thinks he deserves. The action scenes are clean and exciting, with a focus on skilled swordplay rather than magic powers. The show also has a warm side, since Beryl's new role as a parent teaches him things no sword can.

Its themes include teaching, growing older, and finding a new purpose in life. It is a relaxing watch for fans of easygoing fantasy with a grown-up hero.
